Making Great Software Greater

Software as a Service is no different than traditional, boxed software. We must continually provide our customers with better quality software and faster release rates, while maintaining marginal price changes. We must do this to survive.

Emergency Reporting prides itself on its core values, and two of those speak right into the challenge before us: Constant Innovation and Ongoing Relevance.

As the General Manager, my role is to create a place where two things can happen:

  1. Our software engineers can have creative space to build great software, and
  2. We can meet the ever-changing demands of the fire service and the tech industry.

The end result is that our customers receive faster responses to new technical needs, while not giving up anything on the quality side of our product offerings.

To make this work, we implemented an Agile Development Process last year, and so far the results have exceeded expectations. Many of our standard practices were suffering from code rot or technical debt.

However, once Agile was introduced, we were able to spend more time and energy directly where it counts—adding value for our customers.

We have taken many huge steps towards full-integration of Agile practices across all of our systems at Emergency Reporting. We will continue to move more in this direction. The end result is that our customers receive faster responses to new technical needs, while not giving up anything on the quality side of our product offerings.
